Getting Dirty and the Dirt on Dirt!

So dirty This Lil’ guy was black head to toe with dirt.  He loved digging in the sandbox on wheels.

Saturday, we spent our entire day getting our dirt on – literally.
A person can’t possibly garden without dirt – good dirt.  I guess some would say “soil.”

I like the word “dirt.”

I can say it with an accent. A queenish accent.  Or a Texan Drawl accent.  Or my German accent.  It is just a fun word to me – I know, strange, why are reading my blog

Anyhoo…

We went to our Recycle Center and bought compost.  2 cubic yards! That is a lot of compost!

Then we searched high and low for topsoil.  Our local gardening centers didn’t carry enough for our raised beds.

My hubby finally found a man way out in Timbuktu.  We took our trusty trailer and the man filled it to the rim and our tires were about to explode.

The owner of the topsoil saw how many kids we had and I think he felt sorry for us.  He only charged us $20 for about 3 cubic yards.  That was so much cheaper than anywhere else – we felt like God had blessed us.

He even let my kids play with his cattle.  However, they were not in the playing kind of MOOd.  Get it?  MOOd?  Okay, I need to get to sleep.

Empty beds
Before

We also lined the boxes with landscaping felt.
Landscaping helper  We even had Brighton helping.  She has grown so much!

Our Sand box This is our trusty trailer.  It was such a blessing.  So was the guy in the red shirt.  He worked so hard – just because he loves his family!

P2260554 This is our lil’ Green Thumb Princess.  She loves loves loves digging her hands into dirt and planting things.

We did our dirt ratio:  1/3 compost-2/3 topsoil.  Plus, tons of love and sweat!

We’ll be planting soon…stay tuned!  From artichokes to zucchinis!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Things that make me cry…

Love

I live each day as there is no tomorrow, in my mind anyways.

Here are things that I purpose in my life:

  • I try to make each one of my children laugh at least once a day.  A real belly laugh.  Not a courtesy laugh.
  • I don’t go to bed angry.  I will stay up all night long and take a nap during the day, if need be.
  • I tell my kids that they are each my favorite child.  (They might have some idea that I tell all five of them this, but I think they like it.)
  • I make sure that my hubby knows that he is loved and try to fulfill his love language, daily.  (If you don’t know the Five Love Languages by Gary Smalley, it is worth the read!)
  • Having all my laundry done in one day.
  • Listening to my children tell me what their dreams are and how they want to fulfill them.
  • Loving Jesus and others as He loves me.
  • I’m sure I have more…

As I was working in my garden today, I was listening to the laughter of my children playing together.  I was seeing my husband doing back-breaking work un-hauling topsoil and compost into the garden beds just because he loves me and I asked him to help me.  I was seeing the gorgeous green birds fly over our house to roost for the night.

And it hit me…I felt like Mary did when she pondered these things in her heart.

I’m so thankful for the Lord giving me the desires of my heart.

Love.

Real.Life.Love.

I can’t explain it.  I won’t even try.  I just know that I’m thankful.

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Garden Beds from an Old Fence plus a walk through our Orchard in early Spring

There is NOTHING better than the smell of our Texas Mountain Laurel in bloom.  Well, maybe a pool of milk chocolate.

Texas Mountain Laurel smell like grape kool-aid and it fills the air.  Wonderfully good!Mountain Laurel 2011 When these start to bloom the temperature no longer gets chilly where we live.  Today my car temp was around 90 degrees.  It is officially still winter – ha!  Texas Mountain Laurel The purple just thrills me!  It used to be my fave color as a child.  Now I favor blue but I still like this royal purple color…reminds me of royalty.Close up of the petals The sad thing is they only bloom for a little while and then they go back to a green tree.  So sad.  I’ll enjoy them while I can.P2230543Here is one of our Mountain Laurels in our side yard.  It leans like it needs a V-8.  Maybe it does.Half-Naked Orange Tree Here is my sad orange tree.  The bottom of the tree is bare….that is high as my kids can reach.

Okay, now for the raised beds!

We are filling them this weekend, the Lord willing.

Tomatoes, Corn, Okra, Squash, Cukes, and much other lil’ veggies will fill these beds.  I can’t decide what is my fave veggie…

Raised Garden All the beds were made from leftover boards from a neighbor’s fence.  We also built our playhouse/play fort of the other other boards.  I think we could write a book on 101 ways to re-use old fence materials. Corn Box This is where our corn is going.  A “Corn-Box”.  A few years ago, we planted corn.  It didn’t do so well.  Later, a precious friend of ours, told us we needed to have rows at least three so they can pollinate one another.  Who knew?  Well, other than a corn farmer and probably every other gardener.  We hope this works out better. Our longer bed... This is the longer bed.

Can’t wait to be able to walk out before dinner and grab a fresh tomato.  YUM!Orange Tree needs revival Here is the other side of our poor Orange Tree.   Pomegranate Tree Our Pomegranate Tree

It had two blooms on it last year before the hurricane got it.  I’m hoping for more life this year or we might have to do away with it.Mandarin Orange Tree This one is our Mandarin Orange tree. I just love pulling the leaves off this one and tearing them in half – they smell so good!

Hope you enjoyed a lil’ Spring Break!  (smile!)

The work is just now starting for us…praying for a bunch of lil’ green thumbs.

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Our HomeMade Upside Down Tomato Planter

Spring is here in Texas!  We are in Garden-Mode!

(I can’t wait to show you what we are doing-tons of projects!)

Have you seen those Topsy-Turvy,  the very expensive upside down tomato planters?

Well, we made one.  The only thing that would have made it cheaper is if we had grown the tomato plant from a seed.  It costs about $1.50 or so.
Homemade Upside Down Tomato Planter I asked my son to hold it for me.
Notice the book.  He loves his books.  (I’m thankful.)
Inside of the tomato planter The inside of the planter.Already has tomatoes... Notice some of the blooms and tomatoes.Finished Upside-down Tomato Planter
This is what we did…
  • We cut the bottom of the washed out milk carton.
  • We rolled a newspaper into a cone shape to hold the soil.
  • We then used duct tape to hold the newspaper to the carton.
  • We carefully threaded the tomato plant into the spout.
  • We add dirt.  (I just used regular soil.  I hope this works!)
  • We (meaning my eldest) watered it.
We used Husky Cherry Red Tomatoes ($1.50) and Organic Miracle Grow Soil (already had it).  Total project - $1.50.

I have no idea if this is going to work.  It is a “science experiment.”

I let you know it’s progress.  Sign up for my emails, or use the friend follower to stay up to date.

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Be still and KNOW He is God…

Have a Seat...

Have a seat…

As a grownup, it is hard to make decisions.  As a parent, it is harder.

As a child, it is easy.  You just follow the lead of your parents.

As a child of God, He even gives us a book to follow.  Sounds so easy.

But, we know the truth…

Life is filled with decisions.  Sometimes you feel like you are making the right ones then all of a sudden – the carpet is pulled out from underneath you.

Sometimes I just need an adult timeout.

I need to hear God’s Word.

I need to feel His presence.

I need my sinful nature to be overcome with His goodness!

I just love hearing a Rhema word from the Lord.  He is so faithful!

People are people and they are going to fail but He will never let us goHe is not a man that He would lie.

Slow down, be still and know He is God!

Be encouraged this week!  He just adores you!

Blessings to you!  You are so loved!!!

Impromptu Date with friends

My hubby and I make last minute plans - all the time. We actually like to "wing" it.

We love when our friends do the same.

Last week, a friend called me when I was shopping for paint in Home Depot and wanted to see if we wanted to go out.  In a matter of 5 minutes, we found not one sitter but two and within 30 minutes went out (without kids)! (The big shocker - it was on a school night!)

The Gals

The Guys

We are so thankful for our special friends!  It is so nice to have someone to lift you up, someone to laugh with and someone to call on in time of need.

There are some friends in our life that we can go years without speaking and then when our paths pass - it is like we never have missed a beat!  I love those friendships.

A long time ago, someone said you need a Paul, Barnabas and Timothy in your life.  A Paul will mentor you.  A Barnabas will encourage you.  And a Timothy - you will disciple him.

I can't imagine what my life would be like without all the Barnabas.  I need them!

Not fluff encouragement.  But, real encouragement that strengthens me to my inner core.  Encouragement that can only come from the Holy Spirit.

I pray for my children to have Godly friendships.  I also pray that God will direct them to people that they can encourage others.

A man who has friends must himself be friendly,
But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.  Proverbs 18:24

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

We knew the time was coming...

Time is going so fast with this kid!  He is turning into a man.

This past weekend was a super fast whirlwind.

We made progress in our home! Seriously, we had 1,784.3 things to do on the honey-do list. Buying jeans and shoes for the boys was on the top of the list.

I love to shop but not with my eldest.  He is picky and would rather wear flip flops year round.  (I really don't mind, we do live in the tropics.)  However, eventually he will have to get a job and flip flops are probably not going to cut it - we wanted to buy him some sensible shoes.  A nice pair of boots and tennis shoes.

We stopped by one of our fave stores, Rack Room Shoes.  I love that you can buy one get one 1/2 off.  We decided to get our eldest son's feet measured.  Well, he grew like 4 sizes.  FOUR!!!!  I'm still not sure if this is really possible...I think the salesman was a little confused.  But, then again, maybe not.

The salesman's verdict - My 12 year old is now wearing "adult" size shoes. How could this happen?!?   I'm sure it was the salesman fault!

Really, I'm saying - no more $10.00 shoes!  But, the expensive kind.
Adult shoes are big, clunky, and are too big for my eldest baby!  Except the foot part.

So sad...on so many levels.

Next he will be buying a car, getting girl crazy and leaving our safe nest.  (I know this sounds like drama-mama but I've enjoyed my children so much!  It just goes by so quickly!)

The saddest part is when he had on his new boots yesterday - he was taller than me.  (Shh...don't tell.  He doesn't know yet.  I quickly put on my heels.)  I now will be more of the Mrs. Cleaver type and will wash dishes in pumps just so I can be inches above my son.

I'm truly happy that my son will eventually leave the nest and be able to shop alone.

We've put a lot of time, energy, blood, tears, band-aids, jeans, and prayer into that kid.  One day, he is going to be grown-up and make his own decisions.  He will do great - I have no doubt, in flip-flops.

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

I feel like a little girl in a candy store...

I’ve learned or came to realize a few things this week.

I feel like a little girl in a candy store when I learn something new.
  1. I can’t find anything that I need in my house.  It is like pregnancy brain, without the pregnancy.

  2. I organize when I’m upset, mad, or want chocolate.

  3. I’m addicted to sugar.  I really love it.  But, it is not winning.  I haven’t had sweet tea in 3 days.  (However, I did have hot tea with honey…totally not the same.)

  4. Thanks to our friend R. – I now know more about operating systems for computers.  Linux is free and Windows cost money.  Most of you are probably rolling your eyes – saying “duh!”  It was news to me and I love to learn new stuff.

  5. Spiders live a very long time in a baby jar that is forgotten about in a window sill.

  6. I figured out how to make a header for my blog!   Notice the pictures on top of my blog

  7. I also figured out how to create a Landing page on my Facebook Fan Page.  This is what the cool kids have i.e. movie stars, home improvement stores and now lil’ blogs like me!
Hopefully, I will have more "candy" next week!
Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Mubarak, Aggies and Duct Tape on my brain.

Have a seat! These are my thoughts this morning…disregard if you have something better to do...like polishing your mailbox flag or have a seat and explore my mind.  (Be careful…it is a dangerous place!)
      1. People in Egypt are fighting for their rights this a.m. (I get that!)  but why is it that every clip I see on the news, men in the crowds are jumping up and down, stretching and jumping up and down?  I guess I’m just wondering if this a culture thing or is this the universal way of expressing displeasure?  My kids did this when they were young and couldn’t speak.
(President Mubarak has been a hot topic in our homeschool lately.  Praying for Egypt/Africa today.)

      2. Carbs.  I hate them.  I love them.  I hate them.  I love them.

      3. I love my new dog.  Really.  I don’t like animals most of the time.  But, I’m head over heels over this strange, shedding, yellow character in our life.  I can now say to her to sit and she sits.  She is a smarty. I’m thinking Harvard is in her future.  Oh, wait…she is a dog.  I know that.  Texas A and M loves dogs.  She is going to be an Aggie!  Whoop!

      4. I have lost my fave recipe book.  I have lost my computer re-boot disks.  I have lost my quiche dish.  I have lost my green twine.   (I know…who loses their green twine?!) I blame all of this on the Remodel.  I needed all of this for one reason or another yesterday.  It is in the black hole of remodeling.

      5. I love my friends.  They make me smile – daily.

      6. I love my children.  They truly make me cry – daily.  (Tears of happiness – most days.)

      7. I love my husband.  He just gets me.  He understands my love language changes by the hour.  He knows that certain words bug me.  He knows that he shouldn’t laugh when I do something stupid.  He encourages me.  He also is easy to please – just say “duct tape” in a sentence and you have won him over.  Or make him “banana bread”.  Or say “I’m going to the mall”…oh, wait that last one was my love language.
Okay, I’m sure all of you are now polishing that pretty little red flag on your mailbox.

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Photos that might have you in a straight-jacket

      Pure Joy

A long time ago, my little guys and little Princess were up way past their bedtime.
Not to mention they had the giggles.
Oh, how I wish we could go back in time some days.

When all they had to know or cared about…
      was when to go potty
      or
      where was their favorite blanket
      or
just needed their parents to hold them and make their aches feel better.
Oh, how I miss simple thinking days.

I only have one preschooler now.  And he is not wanting to be the “baby” most days.  But, he doesn’t have a choice.

He will be hugged at least 4,716.9 times a day.
Plus, if I just feel like it.  He will be smothered in kisses, too.

Oh, the love in our house is overwhelming – sometimes.

Even if we are in public and I see a baby…I have to hold back or I will want to give some Southern sugars.  (Southern sugars are kisses or smooches.  Northern sugar is refined white stuff that I love in my tea.)

Okay, I must go and wake up a lil’ guy who must need some loving from his Mommy because he is sleeping so soundly.

(Please don’t contact the white jacket people-I’m really sound.   Well, sort of.  Never mind the ramblings today.  I’m just a Mommy with kids growing up too fast.)

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

      May they RIP…

We live in a place that doesn’t freeze very often.  In fact, this is only the 3rd time in the last 8 years that I remember it hitting the 30’s.

Our electricity was out for over 6 hours.  Fun times!  Luckily, we still did our homeschool work.My succulent... It looks so sad now…not sure if it will come back.  All the plants in my backyard…are gone.  (sniff sniff)P2040436 Ice ice baby!P2040438 My oyster plants are gone.P2040440No snow…but tons of ice.  P2040442My sheets blew off.  Plus, my hubs fixed the sprinklers and they were not turned off…adding more ice.    I’m praying my birds of paradise will come back.  P2040444 My birds did make it through the freeze.  I’ve been amazed at all the hummingbirds…they are so fat.P2040451 These steps were slippery…I found out first hand.P2040443This is my Texas Winter Shoe Wear.

How do you save your tropical plants?  Next time, I’m thinking I’ll use boxes and make sure the sprinklers are turned off.

By the way, check out my new header!  Tell me what you think!  It was my first time that I made my own.  :)

      Baked Ziti

      I love pasta!
My kids are not fans of pasta…I think they might be extra-terrestrial beings sometimes.

      I could live in Italy.

My children also love being in Wal-Mart, for hours.

Again, I believe my real children, from my genes, must have been abducted from the earth and I was sent replacements that love camping in Wal-Mart and don’t like Italian food (except pizza).

(I think I’ve proven my point and hopefully no one from NASA will show up to check their blood type.)
Saying all that – they “liked” this recipe!  And it filled their little tummies and made them sleep for hours!

      P1280410

      EASY BAKED ZITI

      • 1 box of uncooked ziti or small tube pasta
      • 1 pound ground turkey
      • 1 jar of spaghetti sauce or make your own
      • 2 eggs
      • 1 (15 oz) ricotta cheese
      • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese (I don’t really measure – just a lot.)
      • Parmesan Cheese, grated or the stuff in the can
      1. Cook pasta to al dente in salted water.  Not to soft  - not to hard.
      2. Brown turkey.
      3. Pour sauce over meat.  I divided the meat mixture into three’s.
      4. In large bowl, combine eggs, cheeses.
      5. Drain pasta.  Add cheese mixture.
      6. Spoon 1/3 meat mixture into rectangle baking dish.  Top with 1/2 pasta mixture.  Repeat layers.    Top with remaining meat.
      7. Cover and bake 350 degrees for 40 or so minutes.
      8. Sprinkle with a little more cheese and bake until melted.
      9. Let stand 15 minutes before serving.
      10. Call the aliens and tell them it came from Neptune’s Wal-Mart.  Enjoy!
Blessings to you!  You are loved!

      Superbowl is this Sunday!

Are you ready for some Football, maybe?

(If you don't know how to play or want to impress your Football Honey - go see our Football 101 for girls!)

My boys are boycotting it. (Well, sort of.)

Every team they routed for this season, lost.
      Every.Single.Team.

The superbowl has meant a lot for our family in the past...

      Girls vs Boys

The girls would pick the team by the prettiest colors.
The boys would pick by which city they like the most.

Such sweet times that we girls, would gang up against the boys.
      Girls always won!

This year, the boys, actually paid attention to the players and really wanted the team that honored their Mom the most.

      Oh, wait - maybe not.

I'm not sure what possessed the boys to pick their teams - I'm sure it had something to do with their favorite Mom.

But, the point being - they don't like the Steelers or Green Bay.   (I hope I didn't just lose readers!  I like the Hershey Chocolates team...yeah, I know it is not a real team...but it should be!)

I'm still going to prepare some yummy food.  It is a tradtion.

I think my boys will change their minds when we decide to watch a Chick-Flick instead.  I just need a good title!  If you have a fave, family friendly chick flick - let me know!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!
