Teaching my kids Scripture…

I have 5 kids, a very impolite dog, 6 chickens, 14 fish, one half remodeled house with no end in sight, and 76 library books due this week.

Who has time to teach God's Word?  I don't even have time to go to the bathroom!

Let me just say:  I do make time to teach my kids  - God’s Word.  The Holy Bible.  New King James Version - most of the time.  We look up the Hebrew, Arabic or Greek translations of the Word when we want to see the original text.  Our whole curricula is founded on the Word of God.  We talk about God’s Word, a lot.

Here is the kicker:
I don’t teach them scriptures just to memorize for the sake of memorizing.  I teach them so they can grow with understanding.  I want them to KNOW God’s Word.  I want them to live through it with true freedom and not legalism.  I want them to KNOW that it is LIFE!  It is something they can take with them even up to death.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 {Shema}
(New International Version)

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.[a] 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Being a Christian Mom, I STRIVE to practice “the Shema.”  Talking and explaining God’s Word every chance we get.

The “hiding The Word in your heart” then becomes 2nd nature because it is what it is – it is real life!

Now, I am not a Bible scholar.  I need help!  I need others to help me – like a village

I pray for God’s guidance daily hourly.

I also use lots of resources.

One of them that helps us learn is listening to certain things when we ride in the car.  My kids are strapped in and they can’t go anywhere!  A great time to have a lesson!  Not to mention, I'm doing 2 things at once.

Have you heard of SEEDS?
logo_hm
It is an awesome way to plant seeds or scripture.  They are songs that are pure scripture.  I love it!

Each package contains two identical CDs - one to keep and one to give to a friend.  I love that!!!  Spreading seeds!

It has opened up a way to converse about God’s Word.  Plus, I’ve caught them singing God’s Word in the other room, by themselves.   That brings so much joy to my heart.

Right now, Seeds is offering Purchasers 20% off their purchase of cd's at the web store (www.seedsmusicstore.com) for the next 6 months!!

Here is a sample of one of their videos!  Love it!

I will strive my hardest to teach God’s Word was not written as just law but is a book of love.

If I don’t succeed, I know that God is able to use whatever means to steer them in the right direction.  He is all-powerful, all-knowing, All in All, and He just parents better than I ever could or will!

Blessings to you!  You are soooo loved!

Oh, OKRA! I was a bad parent!

You were so bad!

OKRA

I understand that I let you grow and grow and grow!
In my hindsight, I should have cut you off when you were younger.

OKRA

But, I had no idea that the older {and longer} you got that you would get a hard personality {or outside}.

OKRA

I could not even get the dog to chew you.

OKRA

I wish I had known better.  I failed you as a parent.

OKRA

So, off to the compost you go.
Sniff.  Sniff.
Goodbye my okra child.

This message has been brought to you:
from a grieving okra pseudo-farmer who has hopefully learned her lesson.
Ever have those kind of children?  Please share a remedy for the next time!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

In my life this week…

Yellow Lab
  • We had our dog spayed
She is now a little calmer.  Before her surgery, she was actually sitting and laying on command (as long as she is listening.)  Just like some kids, I know.

  • We had finally agreed on final remodel plans for our play-room.  (I know that this is subject to change, knowing my hubby’s and mine personality.)

    Are you ready for this?
We are putting in a small library between the office and playroom.  Yeah!
  • I now am trying to eat breakfast.  I’ve never liked cereal.  It makes me feel like I have morning sickness.  But, I’m striving to lose a few baby pounds (or really it’s the self-induced chocolate disease that I have) so I’m forcing myself to eat it every morning.

I guess I could make myself eggs.  But, I can’t stand the smell of them unless my Mom makes them.  My hubby can make them now – thanks to my Mom teaching him.  She has yet to teach me her secret.

  • Our friends, that I asked for prayer for – got a super good report this week!  We are so thankful for God’s tender mercies!

  • I’ve been searching like crazy for cucumber recipes even using Twitter and Facebook.  (Are you following me on there?)  This next week, I’m planning on making pickles, cucumber sandwiches, and yes, cucumber dip!

  • My hubby found my super-duper OLD recipe binder.  I’m now the happiest wife ever!  I now feel a tad bit more organized!  And I’m cooking awesome dishes again.  Next week,  I’ll share a super easy bread recipe and an awesome homemade Cajun Gumbo recipe!

That is all folks!  (Well, for now!)
Blessings to you!  You are loved!

In the Garden…(update)

It has been a while since I have updated our garden.  It has grown leaps and bounds!  Sunflower GardenJune 1st is coming.
That means hurricane season.
Last time I had a sunflower garden, a hurricane tore it down.
We need the rain but I don’t want the high winds!Melon Garden
Our melon garden
I think we planted watermelons and honey melon.  Not really sure.  It will be a surprise!

Green Bean Tepee

The Green Bean Tepees are awesome looking!
The kids keep picking the green beans – not many but truly a display of coolness.

Squash, Zucchini, Okra and Tomato Garden
Squash, Zucchini, Okra and Tomato Garden.

We keep having a problem with a fungus.  I’ve used some organic stuff the local nursery sold us and chamomile tea mixture.  The tea actually worked for a day or two.   The fungus just comes so fast – can’t keep up with it.
Pepper, Jalapeno, Tomatillo, Tomato Garden
This is our Pepper, Jalapeno, Tomatillo, Tomato Garden.

The fungus has spread to the Tomatillos.  They are neat little plants.  The tomatillos look like hot air balloons.
Cucumbers
Our Cuke Garden (Cucumbers)

They are doing great.
Something is on the leaves but doesn’t seem to be hurting the actual veggie.
My girls love picking and eating these!

Cucumber
Isn’t she pretty?
These are growing so FAST!

I need cucumber recipes – if you have one please leave a link!
If I love it – I’d love to feature the recipe!

The Corn Box!

The Corn Box!

I’m scared to check it.  I want them to be so good!
Last time we planted corn, it looked good but it had no kernels.

I can’t wait to grill these on the grill.  YUMMY!  We will probably check to see if they are ready tomorrow…

Thanks so much for coming to ilovemy5kids.  We are so appreciative of all the readers.  I’m blessed so much when someone says or emails me that they read my blog.  I get all embarrassed inside and feel so humbled.  I pray that it will be an avenue for God to truly use to His Glory and encourages someone daily!

Blessings to you!  You are so loved!

How to Build a Garden Trellis

Green Bean Tepee
My hubby and I have been teaching a Gardening Class with a couple other homeschooling families.
(The other Moms taught Spanish and Art.)
My kids have really gained a lot of understanding.
(So, has their Mom.)

One of the last projects my hubby and I came up with was to build a trellis for a plant that vines.

Garden Trellis

Can you see the blue chalk on the sidewalk?  That was my “blueprint” to show the kids what they could do.  The kids got to design their own.  I love kid’s creativity!

Building a Garden Trellis
This was a fun craft that taught a few lessons.

Lesson #1 – Mrs. Lana doesn’t hold nails while the child hammers.Teaching kids to Garden
Lesson #2 – Mrs. Lana’s toes are not to be confused with nails.Teaching kids to Garden
Lesson #3 – Old fence that is not sanded has the potential to give major splinters.
The final lesson – have fun learning (and teaching)!

Gardening Projects for kids
We used some leftover FENCE…yeah, I know another project with fence.
I think I am going to write a book on 101 ways to use leftover fence or boards.

The results…marvelous!
Can’t wait to see vines growing on them either on a fence or in a flower bed!

4th of July Bean Casserole

This is one of our FAVE bean dishes!
Works great at a BBQ or just let it sit in the crock-pot for a hearty dinner!
Did I mention EASY!?!

My mom gave me this recipe. I tweak it every time to fit my needs or what I have in the cabinet!

4th of July Bean Casserole
from ilovemy5kids

1/2 lb sliced bacon, diced
1/2 lb ground beef (I use turkey)
1 cup chopped onion
1 (28 oz) pork and beans
1 (17 oz) lima beans
1 (15 oz) kidney beans (rinsed and drained)
1/2 cup BBQ sauce (Sometimes I use less)
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup sugar (I don't use that much)
1/2 cup brown sugar  (I like light)
2 Tbsp prepared mustard
2 Tbsp molasses
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp chili powder

Cook bacon, beef and onion in a skillet until meat is brown and onion is tender. Drain. I rinse it. Transfer to crock pot and add rest of ingredients. Mix well. Put on low until beans are heated through.

The original recipe said to cover and bake in a 350 degrees for 45 minutes in a baking dish. Uncover and cook for 15 more minutes.

Totally a dish worth taking to a BBQ.   Enjoy!

I totally only do EASY RECIPES!   There are A LOT of them!  Have fun!  You can also do the above recipe in ONCE a MONTH Cooking!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

The Green Birds in our BACKYARD!

True Story!
Nothing makes me get out of a stupor than my kids yelling in their frantic little voices…
“Mom – HURRY come QUICK!  They are in our back yard!”
Green parakeetsThen – I see them!

Yes, it was worth the yelling!

I should say that these birds (the Green Parakeets) actually live in a palm tree in our neighbor’s yard.   We also have Red-crowned Parrots which look very similar - only they have red-crown heads.

But! – We have never seen them in our back-yard bird bath before.
Love it when nature comes to us!
Green parakeetsAs soon, as we took these pictures – they flew away!

I wish I could have taken a better picture…this was taken through our screen door.
They are not the best models and don’t like being still for very long.

They are gorgeous!

End of story!

Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Sunflower Garden and a Few Moments of Fear

Our Garden has been so much fun!  God has truly breathed life unto the seeds that were planted.

(The following Sunflowers are ALL from our Garden!  Isn't God Good?!?)

Texas Orange Sunflower
Not only have the kids benefited but the adults just marvel at God’s goodness and His Wonder!

Texas Orange Sunflower
How a little seed sprouts with just the warm sun, water and soil.
Truly Amazing…Amazing Love!

Texas Orange Sunflower
Flowers can just brighten my day (and no calories!)
  Baby Sunflower
When the blooms started to open…I got kind of scared.
Not scared in the gas pedal stuck to the floor and the emergency brake not working
but the “lightly scared” category.

Baby Sunflower

My Little Fears
  • What if the flower didn’t bloom correctly?
  • What if a hurricane blew in and none of the flowers made it?  (That is what happened before.)
  • What if a wild animal came into the sunflower garden and trampled all the sunflowers?
  • What if I bought the wrong seeds and they were really for cooler temps?
Almost like I was asking…
  • What if God didn’t know what He was doing when He formed the flowers?
  • What if God doesn’t really know what He is doing when He sends a storm in our lives?
  • What if the enemy did destroy, is God not greater than even death?
  • What if all the timing is wrong and I’m not really supposed to be here even for a time or place such as this?

Then I  we  you they bloomed!

The Corn Box and our Garden experience

Corn Box in Raised GardenMy son has had his corn seeds for a few years.  He bought them with his own money.

Years ago, we planted it – it came up but didn’t have any corn.  I thought the boy was going to go into a depression.

We found out later – corn is a fertile type of plant and needs to be planted in rows.

A friend of ours, who is a Professional “corn” Farmer – told us how to do this “Corn Box”.
Every-day my eldest goes out to “weed” his corn box.  He picks the bugs off and feeds them to the chickens.  He even talks to his corn.

The other kids whine “Mommmn, Big Brother keeps calling it “his” corn.”  My response, “Well, he’ll gladly let you weed it.”

No more whining - problem solved.  Wished it worked with my laundry problem…God, Eve was the one who sinned…why do I have to do laundry?!?  I know…I could just quit wearing clothes….did I just type that?

No worries…I’ll keep doing laundry!

Back to Our garden experience…and some benefits!
  • The way the tomatoes taste straight off the vine.  HUGE difference from the store!
  • The way my kids feel the freedom to pick the veggies and we have them for dinner (the same night).
  • The way the entire family has worked as a team – from making the boards, buying the dirt, mixing the dirt, planting, watering (man – our water bill has gone up), picking sucker plants, weeding, and eating new things together.
  • We even get to bless neighbors and friends with extra produce.  Our neighbors love getting zucchini bread and the kids love delivering it!  What a true blessing to bless others!
Blessings to you!  You are loved!

Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks – Lesson Learned

Every evening…around 6-ish.  I hear them.Black Bellied Whistling DucksTheir wings and their whistles.Black Bellied Whistling DucksI don’t know why they choose our block or our roof.Black Bellied Whistling DucksI don’t know what brings them – every.single.night.Black Bellied Whistling DucksI don’t know where they sleep.  Black Bellied Whistling DucksI don’t know what they eat.  Black Bellied Whistling Ducks  They don’t really even bother me!Black Bellied Whistling DucksExcept when I walk to the mailbox and I am barefoot.
That is when I truly know - where they have truly been and left me a souvenir.

ilovemy5kids in Cuneiform

We are studying Ancient History!

Today we studied one of the earliest type of writings…no not chicken scratch – Cuneiform.

Anyway, here is the website if you are interested in making your own monogram in Cuneiform.

This is not a paid ad.  The website has no idea who I am.

I just thought it would be a neat art piece in your living room or a neat addition to your education file.

Blessings to you!  You are loved!
